ITINERARY
Day
1. Fly to Mexico
Board your flight to Mexico City. You’ll
be met by your Tour Director after you clear customs;
then transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day
is free for you to begin settling in and orienting
yourself to one of the world’s largest capitals.
Day
2. Mexico City
A local guide shows you the historic and cultural
highlights of Mexico City. Begin your tour at
the Zócalo, Mexico’s City’s
main square and former heart of the Aztec empire.
Enter the patio of the National Palace to see
Diego Rivera’s murals, which chart Mexico’s
history. Upon exiting, look for the Bell of Dolores,
once rung to inspire the Mexican people to fight
for their independence. Also step inside the Metropolitan
Cathedral for a view of the Altar of the Kings.
You’ll also visit the acclaimed Museum of
Anthropology, where you can view the amazingly
accurate Aztec calendar stone and Moctezuma’s
headdress.
Day
3. Teotihuacan
Journey today to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
whose construction was spurred by a miraculous
vision in the 16th century. Then, visit the awe-inspiring
Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan. On a guided sightseeing
tour, traverse the Avenue of the Dead and climb
the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, architectural
feats complemented by the surrounding mountains.
Travel back to Mexico City. This evening, you
might opt to attend the Ballet Folklórico,
a dazzling performance of music and dance.
Day 4. San Miguel de Allende – Guanajuato
As you make your way northwest to Guanajuato ,
stop in San Miguel de Allende, a quiet, quaint,
cobble-lined town that attracts in the main, artists,
craftspeople and foreign expatriates who have
chosen to retire in Mexico. Your visit takes place
around the town center, where you’ll view
a number of fine examples of great colonial architecture
- including the Gothic-style Parish Church. Arrive
later in Guanajuato, regarded by many as the finest
colonial city in Mexico. On a Tour Director-led
walking tour, explore the maze of narrow streets
and alleyways of Guanajuato, a city under a wash
of constant sunlight and a spell of musical enchantment.
Walk through the Callejon del Beso (Alley of the
Kiss)—at merely a yard wide, legend says
that lovers used to kiss from opposing balconies!
As you wind your way through the passageways in
the evening, listen for the sounds of the callejoneadas,
groups of local students who play traditional
songs, accompanied by lively singing.
Day
5. Guanajuato – Guadalajara
On your guided tour of Guanajuato, which means
“hill of the frogs,” follow a path
through history and learn the brave tale of “El
Pipila,” who fought his way through showers
of gunfire to defend the city from Spanish invaders.
Pass through the Union Garden and on to the Juarez
Theater, where many activities take place in the
annual Cervantino festival—a festival honoring
author Miguel de Cervantes. You’ll then
traverse rugged Mexican countryside as you journey
to Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest
city.
Day
6. Guadalajara – Puerto Vallarta
Today’s guided tour starts at Guadalajara’s
historic center. Here you’ll visit the Cabañas
Cultural Institute, the showplace for some of
Jose Clemente Orozco’s murals, the Cathedral,
emblazoned with yellow and blue tiles, and the
impressive Neoclassic Degollado Theater. You'll
then travel to the nearby village of Tlaquepaque,
an up-market boutique arts and crafts center with
trendy shops and restaurants lining colonial-style
streets and alleyways, plazas and gardens. Continue
on to the Pacific and the coastal paradise of
Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico’s top resorts.
Day
7-8. Free days in Puerto Vallarta
Relax on the golden sand beaches of Puerto Vallarta
as you enjoy two full free days all to yourself.
Activities to choose among include swimming, snorkeling,
boating, fishing, water skiing, parasailing and
kayaking. In addition, you can choose to participate
on different land activities such as day-trip
hikes to a hill-top ranch for a barbecue, horseback
riding, colonial tours, expeditions to visit the
Sierra Madre mountains, tours on an open jeep,
and more!
Day
9. Departure
You’ll be escorted to the airport for your
flight home.
